International school fees in Malaysia: what KL families really pay in 2026 — and where each tier lives
International school fees in Kuala Lumpur span roughly RM15,000 to over RM150,000 per year, depending on tier and year group. At the value end, Sayfol International School in Ampang charges RM15,900 (kindergarten) to RM36,000 (Year 11) on its published 2026/27 schedule. Mid-tier, Taylor's International School KL runs RM19,830 to RM57,240 for 2027 (tis.edu.my). At the top, ISKL's 2026–27 schedule lists RM143,400 a year for Grades 9–12 — past RM150,000 once 6% SST is added — with Alice Smith (RM122,370, Years 10–13) and Garden International School (RM126,870 before SST) in the same band.
The tier sets the fee; the address sets your daily life. Below: the four tiers with verified examples, the 13-year arithmetic, and which neighbourhoods each tier maps to.
How much do KL international schools cost in 2026?
Fees cluster into four tiers. The table uses secondary-level annual tuition from each school's published schedule for the academic year stated (lower year groups cost less at every school). For how these schools compare on reputation and results, see our Top 20 international schools in Malaysia ranking.
| Tier | Typical annual fee (secondary) | Verified example | Example's annual fee | Fee source | Academic year | Typical areas |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Premium | RM100,000-150,000+ | ISKL | RM143,400 | iskl.edu.my | 2026-27 | Ampang Hilir, Mont Kiara, Bangsar-Seri Kembangan |
| Premium | RM100,000-150,000+ | Alice Smith | RM122,370 | alice-smith.edu.my | 2026-27 | Ampang Hilir, Mont Kiara, Bangsar-Seri Kembangan |
| Premium | RM100,000-150,000+ | Garden International School | RM126,870 before SST | gardenschool.edu.my | 2026/27 | Ampang Hilir, Mont Kiara, Bangsar-Seri Kembangan |
| Upper-middle | RM45,000-105,000 | Nexus International School | RM46,050-104,490 | Fee data compiled by doris.school | 2026/27 | Putrajaya / Cyberjaya |
| Middle | RM20,000-57,000 | Taylor's International School KL | RM19,830-57,240 | tis.edu.my | 2027 | Cheras |
| Value | RM16,000-36,000 | Sayfol International School | RM15,900-36,000 | sayfol.edu.my | 2026/27 | Ampang / city fringe |
Two things the brochures underplay. First, one-time fees are significant at the top tier: ISKL's schedule lists a RM59,000 registration fee for new students, Alice Smith a RM20,000 enrolment fee plus RM24,000 refundable deposit. Second, since the 2025 expansion of the service tax, 6% SST applies where annual fees exceed RM60,000 per student — stated on the Alice Smith, Garden and Taylor's fee pages — so premium-tier sticker prices are effectively 6% higher.
Is a more expensive school a better school?
Not automatically — and the honest arithmetic deserves a hard look before you sign. Fee buys facilities, class size, teacher packages and a peer group; it does not guarantee your child's outcome, and Malaysia has no public league table that ties fees to results. Plenty of families are happy at RM30,000-a-year schools; plenty are unhappy at RM130,000 ones.
Now the number nobody says out loud: schooling is a 13–14 year commitment (Year 1 to Year 13, longer with kindergarten). At a mid-tier RM40,000 a year, that is RM520,000 before a single fee increase — and schedules are revised annually, almost always upward. At the premium tier the 13-year total passes RM1.5 million. That is a second property. A family that picks one tier down and banks the difference is not shortchanging the child — it is buying an asset in the child's name.
The variable that actually moves daily quality of life is the one that never appears on a fee schedule: the commute. An hour a day in the car, for 13 years, is a cost no tier discount recovers.
Where should you live for each fee tier?
Each tier clusters geographically, so your school shortlist quietly writes your property shortlist:
- Mont Kiara / Sri Hartamas — Garden International School and Mont'Kiara International School anchor KL's densest school-condo cluster; many families walk or drive under 10 minutes. Premium fees, premium addresses — our take in Is Mont Kiara worth buying?
- Ampang embassy belt — ISKL in Ampang Hilir at the top of the market and Sayfol on the value tier sit minutes apart, so Ampang serves both ends. Older, larger condo stock — see Is Ampang worth buying?
- Cheras — Taylor's International School KL and UCSI International School (Taman Taynton View) make Cheras the mid-tier family's cluster, with MRT access and lower entry prices — see Is Cheras worth buying?
- Putrajaya / Cyberjaya — Nexus International School (Putrajaya) and King Henry VIII College (Cyberjaya) anchor the emerging south: newer townships, gentler prices, but far from KL-centre offices.
Rule of thumb: pick the school cluster first, then shop for the home inside a 15-minute drive of the gate. The reverse order is how families end up doing 45-minute runs twice a day.

Frequently asked questions
Are international school fees negotiable? Any sibling discounts?
Tuition itself is rarely negotiable, but published discounts exist: Alice Smith's fee terms list a 3% discount for upfront annual payment and sibling discounts of 6% for a third child and 10% from the fourth; Sayfol and others also publish sibling discounts. Scholarships at secondary level are the other real lever. Always ask — the discounts are in the fee terms, not the sales pitch.
How big is the cost gap between international and private national schools?
At the premium tier the gap is enormous — several times over. At the value tier it nearly closes: Sayfol's RM15,900–36,000 range overlaps what many private national schools charge, so the real choice at that level is curriculum (IGCSE vs SPM) and language of instruction, not money.
Do the published fees include everything?
No. Budget for one-time entry costs (application, registration/enrolment, deposits — from about RM6,000 at value-tier schools to RM59,000 registration at ISKL), plus uniforms, transport, trips, exam fees and, above RM60,000 a year, 6% SST.
Do fees rise every year?
Schedules are reviewed annually and increases are the norm, which is why every figure in this guide carries its academic year. Plan the 13-year total on the assumption that today's fee is the floor, not the ceiling.
