Malaysia has no Ministry of Education league table of international schools. SMIPS, the ministry's system, is a legal register — it confirms a school may operate, not how good it is. Three published indexes function as a ranking and can be quoted without inventing an order: Spear's Schools Index 2026 (The Alice Smith School is in the global Top 100; no position inside the 100 is published), Carfax Education's Schools Index 2025–26 (its Top 10 South East Asia includes Epsom College in Malaysia and Marlborough College Malaysia, listed but unnumbered), and International School Advisor's 2026 Kuala Lumpur page (10 KL schools by parent rating, on samples as small as one review). Everything else sold as a “Top 20” measures profile clicks, paid placement, or is a directory.

What can you buy near a school?

Pick any school, university or college in the Klang Valley, then drag the radius. Distances are straight-line from the school's own coordinates.

Is there an official ranking of international schools in Malaysia?

No. The Ministry of Education registers international schools under the Education Act 1996 through SMIPS. Registration confirms a school may legally operate. It carries no quality score, no inspection grade and no ordering. EduSwasta's 2026 reading of SMIPS counts 256 international schools nationally; SchoolAdvisor.my's directory lists 241 — 57 in Kuala Lumpur, 112 in Selangor. Those are counts.

International School Advisor (ischooladvisor.com) is the one with a 2026 KL ranking. SchoolAdvisor.my is a directory with no national ranking.

What Spear's 2026 actually says

The Alice Smith School's announcement of 8 April 2026 states it is the only school in Malaysia in the Spear's global Top 100. Spear's publishes two tiers — Top 100 and Top Recommended — and no position inside the 100. Any article giving Alice Smith a number is inventing it. Marlborough College Malaysia appears on the same Asia-Pacific page; Alice Smith's wording implies Marlborough sits on the regional tier, not the global Top 100.

The ISA 2026 Kuala Lumpur page, in page order

Page orderSchoolRating shown on the page
1The Alice Smith School5.0 (2 ratings)
2The British International School Kuala Lumpur (BSKL)no rating shown
3Hibiscus International School5.0 (1 rating)
4Fairview International School5.0 (4 ratings)
5The International School of Kuala Lumpur5.0 (2 ratings)
6St. John's International School5.0 (7 ratings)
7Sekolah Sri UCSI Kuala Lumpur4.7 (259 ratings)
8Cempaka International School5.0 (1 rating)
9UCSI International School – Subang Jaya5.0 (1 rating)
10Garden International School5.0 (2 ratings)

The prestige names carry one to seven reviews — too small a sample to separate them. And Sri UCSI, with 259 ratings, more than every other school on the page combined, still sits seventh. So the page is not sorted by rating either. Read it as parent perception.

Which schools survive more than one independent list?

A school appears below only if two or more sources that are not the same product named it. This is the defensible way to answer “which are the top international schools” without inventing an order.

What do the exam results say?

Figures each school published. Cohorts and selectivity differ, and no independent national league table for Malaysian international schools was found in the local press for 2024–2026. They are here so the numbers carry a named source — not to be read as an order.

A higher percentage is not automatically a stronger school. A selective intake lifts every figure. ISKL is the only one above stating its cohort is non-selective.

What does it cost?

Annual tuition only, as published for 2025/26 or 2026/27, excluding the 6% SST that applies above RM 60,000 annual fees, and excluding enrolment, deposits, transport, meals and exams.

Two fee schedules still would not open on the school's own site — Sunway International School KL and Mutiara — so they stay out rather than be filled with a third-party estimate. AISM, Taylor's, King Henry VIII College and Sayfol would not open on 28 August; their official pages loaded on 29 August 2026 and their rows above carry those first-party figures.

Which “top 20” lists should be ignored?

Not because they are dishonest — each states its method — but because the method does not measure school quality, and the headline gets repeated as though it does.

How should a family read all this?

  1. Curriculum before rank. A family returning to the UK and one applying to US universities should not share a shortlist. British → IGCSE / A-Level; American → AP; Australian → the NSW HSC (AISM); internationally mobile → IB.
  2. Then the budget, honestly. Senior years at the premium day schools run RM 120,000–143,400 before SST, before enrolment of RM 20,000–59,000. The upper-mid tier lands at RM 67,000–113,000, and there are IB and British schools under RM 60,000.
  3. Then the commute. Alice Smith alone splits across Jalan Bellamy and Equine Park — two different housing searches for one school. That is what the radius tool above is for.
  4. Results last, read with the cohort note rather than the headline percentage.

Frequently asked

Which international school is ranked number one in Malaysia?

None is. No source we read publishes a Malaysian number one. The closest defensible statement: The Alice Smith School is the only Malaysian school in the Spear's Schools Index 2026 global Top 100, and Spear's does not publish a position within that 100.

Is Alice Smith or ISKL better?

They run different curricula, so no source compares them directly. Alice Smith is British to A-Level and published 46.8% A*–A at A-Level in 2025. ISKL is American plus IB and published a 34.5 IB Diploma average in 2026 from a cohort it states is non-selective. Both appear on multiple independent lists.

Why do Epsom and Marlborough top the regional index when they are not in KL?

Carfax's Top 10 South East Asia leans towards boarding and prestige provision. Epsom is in Bandar Enstek, Negeri Sembilan; Marlborough is in Iskandar Puteri, Johor. Neither is a central-KL day school, which is why the KL-specific lists look different.

What is the most expensive international school in Kuala Lumpur?

Of the fee schedules we could open, ISKL's is the highest published day fee: RM 143,400 a year for Grades 9–12 in 2026–27, before SST. Marlborough College Malaysia in Johor reaches RM 166,800 including boarding provision.

Does the Ministry of Education inspect and grade international schools?

SMIPS registers them under the Education Act 1996 and confirms they may legally operate. It publishes no grade, score or ordering.

How is the distance in the radius tool measured?

Straight-line from the school's coordinate to the project's coordinate. Primary and secondary coordinates come from the Ministry of Education's 2022 open datasets; universities and international schools from OpenStreetMap. Straight-line is shorter than the drive, so read 1 km as a short drive, not a walk.

Why is AISM not on any of the three indexes?

Absence from an index is about coverage, not a verdict. None of the three citable sources we read named the Australian International School Malaysia — but it is the Klang Valley's Australian-curriculum school, running Nursery to Year 12 towards the NSW HSC, and its published 2026 fees (RM 45,760–97,600 before SST) sit in the premium band alongside the big names above. The same goes for other established schools missing from the tables: sitting outside Spear's, Carfax and ISA's coverage is not a quality judgement.

What does the radius tool cover, and what is missing?

1,439 education points inside the Klang Valley — 102 international, 85 private and independent (including Chinese independent high schools), 61 universities, 813 primary and 378 secondary — against 301 new-launch projects listed on PropertySifu. Known gaps: a few campuses, including University of Malaya's main grounds, are mapped in OpenStreetMap as land rather than a point; some private schools are not mapped at all, and we do not place a school we cannot source a coordinate for; and sub-sale listings are not in this build yet, only new launches.

Method. Every source below was fetched and read on 28 August 2026. Where a page stated no numbered position, none was inferred. Where a fee table would not load from the school's own site, the school was left out of the fee table rather than filled from a third party. Four fee schedules that would not open on 28 August — AISM, Taylor's, King Henry VIII College, Sayfol — were re-checked and read from the schools' own sites on 29 August 2026. Fees exclude the 6% SST applying above RM 60,000 annual fees, and exclude enrolment, deposits, transport, meals and exams.
