Who is Eastern & Oriental (E&O)? The company behind the projects
Eastern & Oriental Berhad is listed on the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia under the stock name E&O, code 3417 [1]. The group takes its name from the Eastern & Oriental Hotel in George Town, Penang, established in 1885 by the Sarkies Brothers, which a subsidiary still owns and manages [1]. Its corporate office is in Pusat Bandar Damansara, Kuala Lumpur [1]. The executive chairman, since 12 May 2021, is Dato' Seri Tee Eng Ho, who formed the construction firm Kerjaya Prospek in 1995; the managing director, since 1 July 2016, is Kok Tuck Cheong [1]. Tee Eng Ho, Toh Siew Chuon and Tee Eng Seng are major shareholders of E&O and also of Kerjaya Prospek Group and Kerjaya Prospek Property [1]; projects under those two companies are not counted on this page.
In Penang, E&O is the master developer of Seri Tanjung Pinang, a 240-acre seafront township in Tanjung Tokong launched in 2005; the company says it has grown into a community of more than 3,000 homes with a gross development value above RM5.5 billion [1]. Andaman Island, previously known as Seri Tanjung Pinang Phase 2, is a 760-acre reclaimed island: reclamation of the 253-acre Phase 1 was completed in late 2019, and the 507-acre Phase 2 is expected to be reclaimed by 2028 [1]. Its first phase is The Meg [4], which KPKT registers under Persada Mentari Sdn Bhd, 80% owned by E&O [1]; the earlier Tanjung Pinang phases are registered under E & O Property (Penang) Sdn Bhd.
In Kuala Lumpur, E&O's partner on several projects is Japan's Mitsui Fudosan: their first joint venture was The Mews in 2013, and the agreement for Conlay followed in 2015 [3]. Conlay, a 491-unit serviced apartment tower on Jalan Conlay with a gross development value of about RM900 million, is developed by Patsawan Properties Sdn Bhd, a 51:49 joint venture between E&O and Mitsui Fudosan [3][1]. The Peak in Damansara Heights, 54 three-storey condo-villas, was the partners' other project announced for 2020 [3]; KPKT registers it as Residensi 18 Teruntung under Damansara Peak Sdn Bhd, 51% held by E&O [1]. In Johor, Avira in Bandar Medini Iskandar, a RM517 million development in four phases, was undertaken through a 50:50 joint venture with Khazanah Nasional and Temasek Holdings [1].
